USB memory device support (Samba)
A USB memory device, such as external hard drive or a memory stick, can be connected to the Homebox. The Homebox will create a network share from the filesystem of the memory device. The network share can be accessed on the local network through the wireless WippiesHome-network and from the LAN-ports of the Homebox.
Supported filesystems
The memory device has to formatted to a filesystem type that the Homebox supports.
Currently supported filesystems:
- FAT16 and FAT32
- EXT2 and EXT3
Currently (2008-04-22) there are some issues with EXT-support.[1]
Activating the network share support in Homebox
Support must be activated from My Wippies administration pages.
- Log in to https://my.wippies.com/
- Select Device Settings
- Select Edit-button beside your device information.
- Select Show Misc. Settings
- Check the Use Samba file sharing box.
- Click Save and wait until the settings have been successfully changed.
- Plug your USB-Device in HomeBox USB port.
Accessing the network share from computer
Usually you can access the share at \\WIPPIES or \\192.168.0.1. You should see a Wippies fileshare or WIPPIES in Vista, that's your storage medium.
How to access USB-Drive in Linux
- Go to Konqueror (KDE, e.g. Kubuntu) or Nautilus (Gnome, e.g. Ubuntu)
- Write in the address line smb://192.168.0.1
- Now you should see all the devices connected to the HomeBox.
How to access USB-Drive in Windows XP
- Go to Windows Explorer.
- Insert \\192.168.0.1 to the address field and press enter.
- Now you should see all connected devices (Folders) in HomeBox. If you don't see them try refreshing the page.
How to access USB-Drive in Windows Vista
- Go to Windows Explorer.
- Insert \\WIPPIES to the address field and press enter.
- Now you should see all connected devices (Folders) in HomeBox. If you don't see them try refreshing the page.
Notes
- At the moment you can't connect an NTFS formatted hard drive (NTFS-Support is under development).
- If you're using for example MP3-player or mobile phone as a storage, you may have to set your device to storage mode.
- On Microsoft Windows operating system the Client for Microsoft Networks has to be installed and selected on the properties of the network adapter.
- Support for Microsoft Windows Vista was added in HomeBox firmware "Sauna-19".
